Zanzibar base orientation
Choosing a beach base
Zanzibar is not one beach: where you stay shapes the trip, because atmosphere, tides, and access differ around the island. This page helps you tell the main areas apart before you choose. It is orientation, not booking, access, or safety advice.
The north (Nungwi and Kendwa)
The northern tip around Nungwi and Kendwa is the area least affected by the big tidal swings, so swimming tends to be easier across more of the day. It is also one of the busier, more developed parts of the coast.

The east coast (Paje, Jambiani, Matemwe)
The east coast has a strong tidal range: at low tide the water can recede a long way, which changes when and where you swim and is part of what makes Paje a kite-surfing area. It tends to feel quieter and more spread out than the north.
Verify at source: Daily tide times and any activity conditions with first-party and local sources before relying on them.
Stone Town as a base
Stone Town is the island's cultural and arrival hub rather than a beach base. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the local conservation authority is the Stone Town Conservation and Development Authority. It suits a short cultural stay or a first night, often paired with a beach area afterwards.

How to narrow it down
If swimming at most tides matters, the north is the simpler choice. If you want a quieter base, the tidal rhythm, or kite-surfing, the east coast is worth researching. And if culture or a short stay is the point, Stone Town works as a base or a first night before moving to the coast.
